So, does PS5 support FreeSync? For those that are looking to upgrade to the next-gen console, this can be an important feature.

Here's everything you need to know...

Does PS5 Support FreeSync?

The simple answer is no, the PS5 does not currently support FreeSync.

However, following a recent update, the PS5 does support VRR on HDMI 2.1 compatible TVs and Monitors.

What Is FreeSync?

FreeSync, also known as AMD FreeSync is a type of VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) that helps to reduce screen tearing a latency.

FreeSync achieves this by matching the refresh rate of the monitor or TV to the frame rate which is sent out from the console or PC.

Some games are more demanding on the PS5 and so the frame rate signal it sends out can vary depending on the complexity of the task.

This can then cause lag if the PS5 cannot send out the frames at the frequency of the TV or monitor, thus FreeSync prevents this from happening.

Will PS5 Support FreeSync In The Future?

Currently, there is no official word on whether or not Sony will support FreeSync, but there is a chance it could happen in a future update or perhaps with the release of the PS5 Pro.

In the Ultimate PS5 FAQ, Sony stated, "PS5 hardware supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) through HDMI 2.1. After a future system software update, PS5 owners will be able to use the VRR feature of compatible TVs when playing games that support VRR."

This suggests that the update was for VRR support for HDMI 2.1 Monitors and TVs but there is no specific reference here to AMD FreeSync.

Why Does The PS5 Not Support FreeSync?

There are a few reasons why Sony's PS5 does not support AMD FreeSync, firstly, it is a specific technology that is not found in all monitors and TVs.

Plus, with HDMI 2.1 VRR now available on the PS5, FreeSync is not a necessary technology.

For those that wish to experience games at 120Hz with VRR enabled, we'd recommend getting a standout HDMI 2.1 monitor to match your PS5.
