Crystal Dynamics has announced that its new Tomb Raider game will run on Unreal Engine 5. The news arrived during the recent State of Unreal 2022 presentation.

The developer also released a 46-second video stating how Unreal Engine 5 would be a game-changer for this next Tomb Raider title, though no new gameplay was shown.

Here’s what Tomb Raider general manager Dallas Dickinson had to say about Unreal Engine 5 and how it will be big for future games (transcribed by Gematsu):

“Crystal Dynamics is proud to be a part of the launch of Unreal Engine 5. This new engine translates into next level storytelling in gameplay experiences. And that’s why we are thrilled to announce today that we have just started development of our next Tomb Raider game powered by Unreal Engine 5.”
“Our goal is to push the envelope of fidelity and to deliver the high-quality cinematic action / adventure experience that fans deserve from both Crystal Dynamics and the Tomb Raider franchise. We can’t wait to take this journey together.”

We still don’t know a lot about this new Tomb Raider project from Crystal Dynamics, and it's unclear as to whether it'll be connected to Lara's last three adventures: Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. They were notable for their more grounded take on the character, and they were largely focused on Lara's origins.
