We finally have a better idea of the Amazon Lord of the Rings series release date, and while filming has finally finished, you'll need to prepare for a long journey first .
The retail and streaming giant announced the first episode will air September 2, 2022, on Prime Video (thanks Deadline).
The Amazon Lord of the Rings series will feature new episodes on a weekly basis, but there's some uncertainty whether each week will see only one episode or more.
What is certain is how massive this project is. Earlier in 2021, The Hollywood Reporter said the series costs $450 million, making it the most expensive TV series ever.

Filming Wraps on Amazon's Lord of the Rings Series
Amazon also provided a new synopsis of its take on Tolkien's fantasy world:
The new epic drama brings to screens for the very first time J.R.R. Tolkien’s fabled Second Age of Middle-earth's history. Beginning in a time of relative peace, thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth.
For context, Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings film trilogy takes place in the Third Age of Middle Earth. The Second Age sees Middle Earth grapple with the aftermath of Morgoth's expulsion - Morgoth was the big bad before Sauron and was much bigger and badder - and the first rise of Sauron.
There's no word what stories Amazon's series will tell in that period, though a source told IGN the image at the top of this post is a familiar scene from the first episode.
