Rare first debuted Everwild at E3 2019, but Video Games Chronicles' Andy Robinson said it'll be a long time before we see Everwild again.

VGC's sources told him Everwild is delayed after the team's new creative lead, Gregg Mayles (Donkey Kong Country, Sea of Thieves), started development from scratch again.

Mayles took over in 2020 following former Everwild creative lead Simon Woodroffe resigned. Woodroffe took on Everwild while Mayles oversaw Sea of Thieves.

Rare offered no explanation for Woodroffe's departure at the time, and VGC didn't mention who is taking over Mayles' position as creative director for Sea of Thieves.

Rare is Reportedly Re-Starting Everwild's Development from Scratch

Mayles decided to reboot the project completely, scrapping five years of development work in the process.

Robinson said the new Everwild release date goal is 2024.

However, it's also considered an optimistic release date.

VGC provided no further details on why Mayles believed the project needed to start development from the beginning again.

The game's executive producer, Louise O'Connell, told VGC:

"The team behind Everwild continue to shape a truly magical experience and remain focused and excited about creating a new game centred around a truly unique, new world."

However, Robinson said other sources familiar with the game's development told him the team is struggling to find a coherent direction for the game outside its visual aesthetic and soundtrack.

Whatever the case, it seems we won't be seeing much of Everwild anytime in the next couple of years.
