If you're in the market for a PS5, or you're lucky enough to own one, you may be wondering if it supports VRR, but as with all things gaming tech, the answer isn't so black and white.
With Sony rolling out some welcome surprises recently, including a recent update that allows for internal storage expansion, we're on high alert for arguably one of the most in-demand features...asides from 1440p support that is!
Here's what we know to date, and whether you should start getting excited, or managing your expectations...
PS5 VRR Support
The short answer is yes, following an update this year from Sony, VRR (variable refresh rate) support is finally here for PS5.
However, VRR is only compatible with HDMI 2.1 TVs or Monitors, and will not work with HDMI 2.0 displays.
VRR support on PS5 is also not compatible with PS4 games that can be played on the next-gen console.

To enable VRR on your console, head over to the screen and video settings where you can choose between two options.
The first enables VRR in supported games and the second enables VRR in all games.
If you opt for the latter, it will force VRR in games that haven't yet taken advantage of it and so may not guarantee success.
Sony has also made it clear that the results of how effective the VRR technology is may vary depending on which TV or monitor you are using.

Framerates tend to increase or decrease depending on what's going on and are by nature, variable.
So Variable Refresh Rate support allows for your TV to adapt to this and match the output of your device more closely, thus resulting in a much smoother image.
The most common VRR technologies are AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-Sync, which are commonly found on the best gaming monitors out there.
In the debate of Xbox Series X vs PS5, it looks like the gap is narrowing as they now both offer VRR support.
Do I Need VRR Support For PS5?
It certainly wouldn't go amiss, however, you can still enjoy fantastic gameplay and graphics on the PS5 in the meantime.
One big thing we'd recommend is going for one of the best HDMI 2.1 monitors you can, or if you're playing on a TV, ensuring it is HDMI 2.1 compatible (check out this list of our top TV picks for PS5 if you're looking).
With this, you'll be able to access 120fps at 4K, which has to be seen to be believed!
